Highest Grossing Westerns of the 1950s
The 1950s was arguably the height of the Western Genre. On the big and small screen. Most of our favorite western screen icons were at their peak. One way these Screen gems were judged was by how much they brought in at the box office. This is what we are focused on today, not a subjective view.

My Top 20 Western Actors

I prefix this video as being a list based on my current preferences. I find my liking of certain actors does change over time. I am sure you all have your own lists. Iconic Cowboy Hats in Westerns
Просмотров 2 тыс.18 часов назад
A staple of cinema, the Western genre first appeared in the late 1800s. Stories of good guys (white hats) fighting bad guys (black hats), outlaws robbing banks, and the law chasing robbers. Cowboys seemed so cool with their swagger, and their clothing choices complemented their image. Their style often foreshadowed their reputation, great hats were as iconic as the westerns they appeared in. My...
Dueling in Westerns

After recently posting a video on the fastest actors with a gun. I thought I’d add another video on the best duels in westerns. I don’t think I’m spoiling anyone's idea about dueling, but in the real west dueling was not a thing. Typically if there was a gunfight it was an ambush, not a face to face duel that hollywood has created for dramatic effect. Having said that, we are here to celebrate ...

Equally impressive with the multitude of roles Mitchum had was the plethora of great directors you mentioned (some just starting, some well-established): Robert Wise, William A Wellman, Fred Zinnemann, Otto Preminger, Howard Hawks, Henry Hathaway to name a few. Fact I hadn't known: both of Robert's paternal grandparents were half-Blackfoot Indian.

Mitchum could play the hero or villain equally well. Perhaps better then any other actor ( think River of No Return and 5 Card Stud). Even those who were good at both like Widmark and Marvin were better as the bad guys.

So many great movies of individual acts of heroism and the overarching strategies that comprised WWII. I would add some which contained no overt violence but had a tremendous impact on the outcome of WWII: 1. The Imitation Game. Unquestionably one of the key achievements to overcoming Germany was the breaking of their 'unbreakable' Enigma machine. 2. The Man Who Never Was. The (mostly) true story of Operation Mincemeat, which helped clear the way for the invasion of the underbelly of Fortress Europe. 3. The Day After Trinity. Talk about 'based on true events', doesn't get more based than this documentary about J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Even if what qualifies a western as accurate is arguable, I would like to draw attention to The Glory Guys 1965. The combat tactics of the troops in meeting an Indian charge by dismounting and forming a line, as opposed to forming a circle, is accurate. Single shot carbines are used and uniforms are basic. Additionally, the climactic battle scene is a fairly accurate depiction of the Little Big Horn senn from Reno's point of view.

Ben used to do a variation of the draw clap in Magnificent Seven. He would have you stand an arm’s length in front of him and hold your hands shoulder width apart. Then he would tuck the thumb of his gun hand behind his belt buckle. He would tell you that when you see him move clap your hands as fast as you can. I stopped after two times because it really hurts when you clap hard and hit that barrel. I never saw anyone beat him.

Buddy Hackett they say was fast. Hugh O’Brian claimed his 0.25 of a second was the fastest, but Davis Jr. and Lewis were reportedly faster. O’Brian challenged Audie Murphy to a contest, but when Murphy requested live ammunition, O’Brian wisely declined. Others who were good at fast draw during the 1950s and 1960s, says Firearms Editor Phil Spangenberger, included Wally “Mr. Peepers” Cox, Hugh Downs (a host of the early Today show), dancer Donald O’Connor, singers Marty Robbins and Frankie Lane, and actors Glenn Ford, Clu Gulager, Ernest Borgnine, Jock Mahoney and Clint Eastwood.
